Curwen Primary School

Summer 1

Understanding the world and Expressive Arts and Design

This term, our topic is ‘Growth’ and we have thoroughly enjoyed talking and sharing what we have learnt about living things, ourselves and decay. We followed instructions to plant some seeds and then watched them grow. We have used our listening and communication skills to learn about the life cycles of plants, duck, chicks and the human cycle. We have developed our writing skills and used our sounds to write about the life cycles of the chicks we had at school. Our trip this term was to West Ham Park.  We used our writing skills to write about our fun-filled session.  We looked at plants, did tree rubbings and found other living things in the park.

Maths

In reception this term, we have moved onto exploring our mathematical understanding of numbers beyond the number 10! We have been exploring our teen numbers, and using number lines to support us with this. We have learnt to share into equal groups, this has help us solve halving and doubling maths problems.  This will help us to develop our problem-solving strategies and become better equipped to develop our mental strategies when we are working out our maths stories.  We have now started to look at two numbers which we add together to give us the total of 5, and as well as our number bonds to 10.

Literacy

In Reception, we are continuing to build the foundations of early reading and writing. They are developing their ability to read and write simple sentences by using their growing phonics knowledge and applying key writing skills. We are learning to use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, finger spaces between words, and full stops at the end. Through engaging activities such as word and sentence writing, shared reading, handwriting practice, we are becoming more confident in communicating ideas clearly and independently.
