Autumn 2

This term, the children have been reading their class books and their learning has been focused around reading skills. During each lesson, children had the opportunity to read their class text, understand a grammar rule and link it to their book, as well as understand what might happen next in their book. We have used the settings from exciting moments within these stories, for the children to create their own extended writing. They have created effective setting descriptions using figurative language, complex sentences and their understanding of theme and tone. Children enjoyed making predictions and drawing pictures to summarize their class books. 5M was reading Stormbreaker, 5CB was reading Boy at the back of the class, 5A was reading Kensuke’s kingdom and 5I was reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone.

Maths
This term, Year 5 has been diving into the four operations and exploring how they connect to real-life situations. After mastering the methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, the children applied their skills to missing-number challenges, worded reasoning problems and spot the error puzzles. They particularly enjoyed the challenge days, where they could show off their understanding, and loved using dienes to deepen their learning through hands-on exploration. Overall, it’s been an exciting term full of problem-solving, discovery and mathematical confidence!

Science
This term year 5 have been carrying on their learning about Space. The children have begun experimenting to understand how shadows are formed, why we have day and night here on earth and explore the relative sizes of the planets in relation to the sun. We have been particularly excited to welcome our parents into our classes to share in our science learning. During the science afternoon, the children set up experiments based on their science learning and tested their parent’s knowledge about the solar system. Parents had a go at ordering the planets, exploring Venus’ volcanoes, experimenting with craters and how they are formed on mercury and then undertake a mission to mars. Parents enjoyed the experience and the children enjoyed running them.
