Year 5 Autumn 2 Website Update
Literacy
This term, the children have been reading, exploring, writing and performing their own poetry, as well as poems from a range of authors and contexts. During each lesson, children had the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of poetic features and how to plan their writing to affect the reader/listener in the desired way. Children enjoyed performing their poems, focussing on pace, volume, rhythm, tone and emotion. To be successful in their performance, the children approached their poetry from the perspective of a performer rather than a writer, which provided an interesting and fun way to gain a deeper understanding for the features, meaning and themes in their poems.
Year 5 has now begun to read Oliver Twist as the class text. This classic piece of British literature links perfectly to the current History topic - “The Victorians”.

Maths
This term in maths the children have learned a lot about fractions. They started the unit by recapping and exploring different ways to make a whole using a fractions board. They then moved onto making equivalent fractions, followed by converting fractions between mixed number and improper fractions. By the end of the week, they were able to add and subtract fractions with different denominators.

Topic
This term, Year 5 started off the term with some observational drawing in art. They looked at the techniques of Georgia O’keef and how she zoomed in on parts of flowers and they used this to inspire their own work. Children then did drawings of different fruit and veg using oil pastels.

In History, they began learning about the Victorians and have been exploring who Queen Victoria was, what significant events happened during the Victorian times and how children were treated during this period. Children have been having the opportunity to ask and answer a lot of questions, thinking critically about how the changes during Victorian Britain have impacted our lives today.
