Mobile Phone use in School

We know that mobile phones are a useful tool for keeping in touch with the world, and that parents often want their children to have them as they get older, particularly if they are walking home alone. In school, we limit mobile phone access to ensure we keep everyone safe. Please see our Mobile Phone Statement below.

Children

If children are 'home alone' then we understand that often parents and carers want them to have a mobile phone. Any children bringing a mobile phone into school must hand it in on their arrival at school. They can then collect it at the end of the day / after clubs. Mobile phones are kept safely in the main office or a member of SMT's office and handed back to children when they are going home. If children are caught with mobile phones during the school day these will be confiscated and returned to a parent/carer.

Staff

We have designated areas for staff to use mobile phones, and unless in exceptional circumstances staff are not permitted to have personal phones around the children in school. This does not apply during educational visits where they are necessary for safety reasons.

Parents and Carers

In order to keep all of our children safe, we ask that parents do not use mobile phones if coming into school for different events. We currently allow photographs and filming at special assemblies and school events, however parents are always reminded to keep these for personal use only and not to share via social media.

When collecting your children, we ask that you please welcome them with a smile, not a mobile phone. This ensures teachers can quickly and safely hand over children and relay any messages.

Our suggested rules for children staying safe on mobile phones at home:

1. Phones only to be used in shared family spaces, never alone in bedrooms.
2. Children to ‘hand in’ phones when they go to bed
3. No apps to be installed on phones without parental permission. Parents to check these first
4. Think before clicking ‘send’. Would my mum / dad / teacher approve of this message?
5. No sending or sharing selfies or photographs without permission from parents/carers
6. No Whatsapp groups. Speak to people on a 1-1 basis only
