Autumn 2

Topic

Year 5 has been learning about Space and the Solar System. We studied planets to understand their characteristics; we looked at orbits, stages of the moon, shadows and much more. We found scientific proof that Earth is spherical, as well as coming up with conclusions that proved how shadows are created, how day and night happens and how seasons occur. It has been a topic we have truly enjoyed. We finished with a journey to Mars using the NowPressPlay. Look at one of our projects.

Literacy

Year 5 has been exploring different genres this half term. 5C has been reading Point Blanc and 5W has been reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Both groups wrote fabulous descriptive writing. Meanwhile, 5B, which read The Chamber of Secrets, wrote persuasive writing. Finally, 5L, which read Alex Rider Stormbreaker, wrote a newspaper article about a mysterious flying boy saving the country.

Maths

Year 5 has been developing their understanding of bar model. After the previous learning of place value and the 4 operations, children used this method to identify the operations they had to use to solve different word problems. Children felt more confident after this. They were able to explain the steps to solve different problems and identify mistakes made by others. Take a look at some of our work!
