Plants and the Plants Lifecycle 

In science this term we are learning plants and their lifecycle. We learned the different parts of a flower by acting them out. This really helped us to remember all the difficult words. Drama also helped us to understand the processes of pollination, fertilisation and seed dispersal. We found that learning can be just as much fun as playing!

 

Our Local Area

Our new topic this term is ‘Our Local Area’. We have been exploring maps of the UK using various resources e.g. digital maps, atlases and globes. We have used the maps to locate the cities and counties within the UK and then worked alongside our friends to work out the 4 - figure grid references to describe the locations. Using the eight compass points we have been able to direct each other from one city/ county to another. In week five we are visiting The Olympic Park within our local area and we are looking forward to using our map skills as we carry out a local fieldwork investigation.

Maths

We have started maths in Year 3 by learning about different rotations and turns. Using directional language, we worked in groups to create instructions for the bee bot to travel through obstacle courses that we made.  We have learnt about different rotations including; clockwise and anticlockwise, as well as identifying the difference between quarter, half, three quarter and full turns. We worked with mini bee robots to make them move in certain directions after being given instructions from someone else, using the language of clockwise and anticlockwise. We recorded our instructions on big pieces of paper and then tested them to see if they were accurate.

We have also been recapping our knowledge of number and working out the value of each digit within a whole number. As well as working with number and place value, we have been working on telling the time on analogue and digital clocks to the nearest 5 minutes.

Literacy 

This half term in Literacy we started learning about fronted adverbials and how they are used in writing. We rearranged sentences to see how punctuation changes once the adverb is placed at the start of a sentence. This really helped us to remember to use a comma when we started using fronted adverbials in our own sentences. We also talked about how adverbials and adjectives can make our writing more detailed and interesting to the reader.
