Autumn 1 Update

Maths

Year 4 has been learning different mathematical concepts this term. We focussed especially on understanding numbers, from place value to partition or the use of grid method to solve multiplications. We started working in groups and helping each other to recognise the value of each digit in a number. This facilitated the more challenging learning as we had a strong foundation. We also learnt about units of measure and conversion between units.

In Geometry this term, Year 3 have been learning about full, half and quarter turns. After practising these turns for a while, we then learned about clock-wise and anti-clockwise turns. To help us with this, we created obstacles on our tables and gave instructions to the Bee Bots to move around from one place to another using the terms clock-wise and anti-clockwise instead of left and right.

Geography

In Geography this term, Year 3 children have been building on their map skills from KS1. We have also been discovering more about tour local area by carrying out fieldwork. In lessons, we have been focusing on describing the location of different places on a map using directional language (8 compass points) and 4-figure grid references. As part of developing our map skills further, we also explored different types of maps and discussed their similarities and differences.
