Curwen Primary School is very proud to have been crowned the Plaistow Summer Reading Challenge Champions for 2021. The school was top of the charts, having the most finishers of the competition amongst all of the schools in Plaistow, with 273 pupils taking part. 

The Summer Reading Challenge 2021 theme was Wild World Heroes, with the Reading Agency teaming up with WWF to encourage children to stand up for the planet and make the local area better for the people and animals that live here. Wild World Heroes featured amazing books, awesome rewards, and plenty of ideas for taking care of our environment. 

Children were thrilled to be awarded the Reading Challenge Shield last week, when Cllr Joy Laguda, Andrew de Heer and Ms.Joanna Sniegucka from Plaistow Library, visited school for a special presentation. Children that completed the challenge were excited to receive a certificate, in celebration of their achievements. 

Reflecting on the award and how many books children read, Benji in year 2 said, “I got to read a lot of different books,” and Claire, also in year 2, added, “I love reading fairy tales and non-fiction books.” Children in year 6 were equally enthusiastic about the Wild World Heroes challenge. Ammaar shared how much he enjoys books; “I just love reading! I especially enjoyed reading one of David Walliams latest books, Code Name Banana.” Aisha explained her love of choosing books: “we have been reading the Alex Rider series, by Anthony Horrowitz, and really enjoyed the book Skeleton Key. I just love going to the library to find a book that I haven’t read yet!”

Mr Smale, English Subject Leader and Assistant Headteacher said of the award, “We are so proud of our children, going above and beyond, and reading so many books. It’s testament to their passion and love of reading. Bring on the Winter Reading Challenge!”
