Summer 1

Literacy
To kick of their writing of a disaster story, year 5 has been reading Survivor – escape from Pompeii. Children are enjoying learning about earthquakes and tsunamis and the impacts of these disasters on a community. This literacy unit links closely to our geography sustainability topic this term and we created freeze frames of a scene from the book to summarise the chapter we have been reading. Children are also writing their final narrative piece, a story where their main character is facing the perils of a disaster.
Topic- Science
This term in Science, Year 5 have been exploring the properties of materials, with a particular focus on how different materials can be separated. We have investigated methods such as evaporation, filtration, sieving, and magnetism. The children took part in a range of practical experiments to test these processes in action. Throughout the unit, they have developed their predicting and observation skills while drawing conclusions from their results.
Maths
This term, we have been learning all about angles and the children have worked collaboratively to use protractors to find the accurate measurements for angles. They recalled the different types of angles, learnt how to use this knowledge to find missing angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. Some of the children have also moved on to converting different units of measurements (ML, L, CM, M, KM). Finally, we are learning to tell the time using the 12- and 24-hour clock.
