Autumn 1

Literacy

This term, the children have been reading information texts and Greek myths. They identified features of non-chronological reports and then spent their time gathering information and writing their own report. All children learnt vocabulary that was specific to the ancient and modern Olympics. They understood that information can be organised in ways that appeals to readers and wrote their own report about the Olympics, making use of parenthesis and bullet points.

Children enjoyed their literacy lessons linked to the Ancient Greek Myths. Completing comprehension questions, retelling the stories and creating new endings for the myths. This learning has also linked to the children’s history studies and PSHE lessons, as they have explored what the myths tell us about the Ancient Greek society.

Maths

In maths this term, the children have been learning a number of different things and using a range of skills. These include division and multiplication by 10, 100 and 1,000. They have all really enjoyed this and there are various children that are keen to come up and show the class how to navigate the place value chart when either multiplying or dividing. We have also moved onto column addition both with and without carrying. The children have also been working on their resilience particularly with finding missing numbers, and have been very positive with their learning in maths.

Topic

This term, year 5 has been learning about the ancient Greeks. This has opened up a lot of amazing discussions about Democratic living and how in the UK we are influenced by the ancient Greek system of voting for who represents the people. The children spent some time exploring where Greece is, what has changed in Greece since the ancient times and what seas it is located in. They also did a lesson where they put dates of ancient Greece history on a timeline, exploring the meaning of BC and AD. Children learnt that other events they have studied while here at Curwen happened t the same time as some other events they learnt about.

Chigwell Row

In September, 5CB and 5C finally enjoyed their long-awaited trip to the Girlguiding Adventure Centre on Chigwell Road, which had previously been postponed due to the extreme heat in July.

It was an activity-packed day filled with rock climbing, zorbing, and sledging. The trip provided a brilliant opportunity for pupils to put Curwen’s core skills of teamwork, resilience, and communication into practice in a fun, challenging environment. Both the children and accompanying staff had a fantastic time overcoming challenges and building memorable experiences together.
