A Term of Exploration and Discovery

This term, our class has embarked on a fascinating learning journey across all subjects, building both academic knowledge and practical skills.

Literacy and Reading

To kick off our non-chronological reports, we visited London’s Southbank to gather rich, real-world detail. Back in the classroom, we analysed persuasive leaflets to learn how writers convince an audience—and then applied those techniques to our own writing.

We have also honed critical reading skills, including skimming, scanning, distinguishing fact from opinion, sequencing, and inferring meaning. By exploring characters and central themes across a variety of texts, the children have deepened their overall comprehension and analytical thinking.

Geography and Fieldwork

Our geography unit took a hands-on approach this term, focusing on key fieldwork techniques and map skills. The children developed their confidence in reading, interpreting, and navigating different types of maps.

Mathematics

In math, we focused intently on number properties—exploring factors, multiples, prime numbers, prime factors, and square numbers. We also strengthened fluency across the four core operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Through regular group and partner tasks, students actively built essential learning habits, including teamwork, clear communication, resilience, and self-reflection.

History

In history, we undertook an important study on the outbreak of World War II. We investigated its root causes, from the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles to the aggressive expansionist aims of Nazi Germany.

The children learned about the policy of appeasement—where Britain and France initially conceded to Hitler’s demands, such as annexation in Czechoslovakia, to prevent conflict. When this policy failed, Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Honouring their commitment to protect Polish independence, Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later. The children also explored how this initial stage of the war introduced the fast-moving military tactic known as Blitzkrieg ("lightning war").
