Spring 1

Topic (History)

This term, our topic has been “People Who Fought for Our Rights.” We learned about significant individuals such as Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Elizabeth Fry and Emmeline Pankhurst. We developed our History skills by ordering events chronologically on a timeline and using a range of sources to find out about the past. Through discussion and role play, we strengthened our communication and language skills, worked collaboratively as a team and practised listening carefully to others’ ideas and opinions while imagining how these people may have felt. We also used Now Press Play to listen to a story about Florence Nightingale and learn how she helped to develop and improve hospitals.

Literacy

In Literacy, we developed our writing skills by reading the fantasy story Chocolate Planet. We explored how to use exclamations, conjunctions, adjectives, nouns and expanded noun phrases to make our writing more exciting and detailed. We drew story maps and storyboards to help us understand and sequence the story and then changed the names of the characters and monsters to create our own versions. We also created our own chocolate planets using sweets and chocolate to inspire our ideas, which helped us to plan and write imaginative and descriptive sentences.

Maths

This term, one of the topics we explored was Money. We learned about a range of coins and discussed their values. By setting up shops in our classrooms, we developed our understanding of how money works including spending money and receiving change. We built our resilience by choosing the correct coins needed to purchase items of a certain value and solving problems when our first choice did not work. Alongside this, we reviewed column addition and subtraction using tricky columns and explored fractions of an amount. We will continue to develop these maths skills both in school and at home with our families.
