    Summer 2- The world around us

    It has been wonderful watching our Nursery children grow so confident! They are eagerly exploring the world around them, trying new activities with a smile, and proudly sharing stories about their lovely families and friends. Together, we’ve been on an exciting journey across Planet Earth, discovering different life cycles, animals, and the beautiful places they call home. By asking big, curious questions like where we live, where we go to school, what the weather is doing, and where animals make their homes; the children have beautifully welcomed new words into their vocabulary, including habitat, sea, land and Planet Earth.

    Our lovely children and families shared a special day out together on our trip to the London Aquarium! There was so much excitement in the air as we all hopped on the train from Plaistow Station to Westminster Station. Along the way, we discovered the London Eye and the River Thames. It was a wonderful day filled with big smiles, shared memories, and a beautiful adventure into the city.

    As part of Family Week, we welcomed Ark Farm to our school playground. The children had a fantastic time observing and touching a variety of animals, including Jess the friendly dog. This interactive experience has been wonderful for developing the children's understanding of the world, helping them learn how to respect and care for living things and the natural environment.

    A big thank you to all the families who joined us for our sports day. We are so proud of our nursery children, who put their absolute best effort into EYFS Sports Day! They thoroughly enjoyed navigating the big playground through a variety of running, jumping, balancing, throwing, and catching activities. A warm thank you to all of our families for coming along to support; your encouraging cheers made it a wonderfully positive experience for everyone involved.

    As part of our transition preparation for Reception, we welcomed children and their parents into the main dining hall for lunch. This was a wonderful opportunity for families to experience the school lunchtime routine together, sharing smiles and enjoying a taste of our delicious school meals.

  • Summer 1

    This term, the children explored the concept of Growing and how we change over time. The children love sharing their baby photos sent by families. They noticed how much they have grown and how their bodies have changed. The children are beginning to understand that we need healthy food, water, sleep, and exercise to grow. This is always a highlight of our topic.

    The children explored new vocabulary including change, growing, same, and different, as well as big, small, little, and tall. These concepts were brought to life through engaging stories: The Enormous Turnip, Dora’s Eggs or The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

    Through our stories, the children have been developing their sequencing skills by identifying what happens next and discussing what they can see. They are also learning to recognize characters and settings within the stories. Story time is a much-loved part of our daily routine, and the children particularly enjoy using actions and nursery rhymes that link to the stories.

     

    Our Friday P.E. lesson turned into a stage for discovery as the children were introduced to the world of gymnastics! With a determined smile, they practiced balancing and rolling, showing wonderful emerging gross motor skills. It was amazing to watch them navigate the mats with such enthusiasm, gaining confidence in their spatial awareness and learning how to move their body with control and grace.

     

     

     

    There has been a real sense of wonder in Nursery as the children chose to sow either a sunflower or a broad bean seed. Through this hands-on experience, they have learned that plants need water, soil, and sunlight to thrive. While our sunflowers are taking a little extra nap, we are all delighted to see how strongly the broad beans are growing. This journey is helping the children understand the natural world and the patience required to nurture living things.

        

     

    We have introduced the children to our 'Number of the Week' and used nursery rhymes to support their understanding of mathematical concepts. The children are beginning to use number names and recite them in order; it has been wonderful to see them sharing their learning with parents through their homework.

     

     

    With the sun beginning to shine, the children have explored ‘big playground.’ They crawled through the tunnel, pretending to be a caterpillar tucked inside a cocoon. This playful movement is fantastic for their gross motor development, as they learn to negotiate space and coordinate their limbs in confined areas. Not only builds their physical core but also helps them develop the language and social skills needed to play cooperatively with their friends.

     

    Nursery has been filled with excitement following the arrival of some very special visitors—the chicks! Children had the opportunity to watch the eggs begin to crack and finally hatch inside the incubator. This hands-on experience has sparked a flurry of new vocabulary, with the children confidently using words like 'life cycle' to describe what they were witnessing. Watching them handle the chicks with such gentleness and care was a beautiful testament to their growing empathy for living things.

     

     

    It has been such an exciting term, and it is wonderful to see each child truly thriving in their development. As we head into our final week of Summer 1, the anticipation is building for our trip to West Ham Park next Friday!

  • Spring 2

    "People Who Help Us" topic has truly come to life this month. The children have shown great progress in their social skills and confidence while learning about different roles in our community. Our trip to the library was a milestone moment. Walking together as a group allowed the children to connect their home lives with their school environment as they pointed out where they lived. Children received their first library card. Library staff read Handa’s Surprise and sang some of our favourite nursery rhymes. We hope we have laid the foundation for their reading journeys. Thank you to the parents who made this trip possible!

    The "People Who Help Us" topic supported the children’s language and attention skills. We’ve been busy exploring the roles of the people who support us at home, at school, and in the wider community. The children took on the roles of doctors, dentists, vets, policemen, firefighters or builders all engaging in different role play scenarios. But the excitement didn’t stop there! We also took the opportunity to find the "hidden heroes" right here at school. The children loved visiting the kitchen to meet Lisa the school chef; stopping by the reception to see the office staff and say hello to our librarian Ms Fuller. It has been a joy to watch them connect with the people who work behind the scenes to help us learn and grow every single day.

      

      

     

    We celebrated World Book Day in style! Families helped the children design and wear t-shirts that represented their favourite books, authors, or characters. Every t-shirt was fantastic, and we struggled to choose a winner because the designs were so creative. Thank you to everyone for making the day so special!

       

    Finally, A huge thank you to all the families who helped create such fantastic carnival costumes! We are getting ready to celebrate International Family Week. The children have been busy exploring different countries, looking at colours in flags, listening to music around the world and saying “hello” in different languages.

    Our theme this term is ‘Who am I?’ Over the past seven weeks, the children and their families have been slowly settling into Nursery routine. They have been learning to recognise their own picture and proudly say their names: “My name is ….”  They now wave goodbye to their parents and carers with confidence and greet the nursery staff with happy smiles. Each day, they are enjoying their time more and more—making new connections, discovering new things, and beginning to explore the wonderful environment around them with curiosity and joy.

    The children are beginning to use lovely words like please, thank you, sorry, my turn, your turn, and Can I play with you?… to help them play and talk together. It’s been wonderful watching new friendships grow, with children remembering each other’s names and even taking photos of their new friends. They love showing us their play and proudly sharing what they’ve made.

    This term, the children have been learning all about Growing and how things change over time. They explored new words like change, growing, same, different, big, small, little, and tall, bringing these ideas to life through stories such as The Enormous Turnip, Dora’s Eggs, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    A special part of our topic was sharing baby photos sent in by families. The children were delighted to see how much they’ve grown and loved talking about their own changes. These conversations were full of joy, wonder, and pride.

    Each child also planted a bean and took it home to care for, giving them a chance to see something grow with time and love—just like them.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Most wonderfully, we’ve seen the children grow in confidence and communication. They’re finding their voices, making friends, and expressing themselves more clearly every day. We couldn’t be prouder!

    We also had some special visitors recently—chicks! The children were fascinated to learn all about them and explore the life cycle of a chicken, deepening their understanding through hands-on experiences.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    We have introduced the children to our Number of the Week and used nursery rhymes to support their understanding of numbers. The children are beginning to use number names and recite them in order, and it’s been wonderful to see them sharing their learning with parents through their homework.

    It has been an exciting term, with each child thriving in their development. We ended the term on a high note with a fun-filled outing to West Ham Park, joined by all our friends from Nursery. It was such a joyful experience for everyone!

    What a half term! Children have truly enjoyed these weeks full of different opportunities to learn
    new skills, deepening our understanding and consolidate friendships. Our theme this Spring 2 is
    People Who Help Us.
    A big thanks you to all mums and dads who took children in their first educational visit to the local
    library. The children enjoyed walking from Nursery, pointing out where they live and what they
    could see. It was fantastic to involve the parents and promote the importance of reading with your
    child. Children got their first library card; everyone was very excited to be able to take books home
    and were encouraged to join in all different activities Newham Libraries offer. Library staff
    performed “Goldilocks and the 3 bears” and sang some of our favourite rhymes.

    The children have learnt about the world around them and a range of jobs in the environment. Who
    help us at home? Who helps you at school? Who help us in the community? Children engaged with
    others in their play, showing an interest in different occupations and people who help them every
    day. They explored doctors, dentists and vets. We read stories about different occupations and
    enjoyed acting these out using the resources in Nursery. The children visited new environments
    around school learning about people who work there; such as the chef in the kitchen, office staff in
    the reception and the librarian in the library.

    We celebrated World Book Day; children created their own Story Spuds. They use their imagination
    to dress up a potato as their favourite character. Adults really struggled to choose a winner. All
    spuds were fantastic!

    Children are getting ready to celebrate Curwen International Family Week. Learn about different
    countries around the world. Children are able to identify the colours of different flags, beginning to
    learn about different habitats across the world. We said hello in different languages and made our
    costumes with our families ready for carnival. During P.E , we have been practising our dance moves
    ready for our big carnival. A very special applause to all children’s families who support children
    helping to create our fantastic carnival costumes!!!

    This term has flown by, we have had lots of events and learning opportunities over the last six weeks. It has been enjoyable learning lots of new skills and watching the children deepen their relationships with their peers and staff. In Spring 2 our theme was People Who Help Us; we have visited the local library, explored jobs in the school, celebrated World book Day and enjoyed International Family week.

     

    The children have built their curiosity of the world around them, listening and acting out a range of jobs in the environment. They were able to engage with others in their play and showing an interest in different occupations and people who help them every day. They explored different occupations through stories and enjoyed acting these out using the resources in Nursery. The children visited places around the school learning about people who work there. Such as the chef in the kitchen, office staff in the reception and the librarian in the library.

     

    The children have learnt about medical professionals, firefighters, and police officers. They have been identifying objects which different jobs need to help them such us a stethoscope for doctors, a hose for the fire fighter or tools for builders. We have been supporting the children to understand their needs and wants. Recognising when they need the toilet, how to wash their hands, to drink water, have a healthy snack and modelled brushing teeth. They are beginning to be aware of others needs and wants.

     

    Families were invited to visit the Plaistow library, where an engaging interactive story telling session was performed by the staff at the library. We worked with the library to issue the children their library cards so they were able to take a book home and encourage parents to visit again. The children enjoyed walking from Nursery, pointing out where they live and what they could see. It was fantastic to involve the parents and promote the importance of reading with your child.

     

     

     

    International Family week was a week to remember, learning all about different countries around the world. The children were able to identify the colours in different flags, beginning to learn about different habitats across the world. We said hello in different languages and made our costumes with our families ready for carnival. The children loved learning the dance moves in PE for their carnival dance and especially getting to make their costume with their parents. The week was finished off with the outstanding carnival, which the children were phenomenal!
