Spring 2

Literacy

In Year Three, as is the case throughout the school, we read from a large selection of books.  These books are on loan from the school’s library, which is a rich reservoir of information, at the heart of all learning at Curwen.

World Book Day

This term was an opportunity for the children to express their opinions about the books, which they have read.  They put their thoughts into jars, and used these jars to talk about how they felt about their favourite books and preferences. These jars then generated conversations about authors, their style and abilities to introduce topics, which affect us in today’s world.

Within the Literacy hour, children are given a photograph, which they use to create their own stories.  This is called

Free Writing.  Very often, teachers are left in awe of the abilities of their children to write freely, and to express their innermost thoughts.

Given the above photograph, one child (Daniel Sousa-Brito) wrote:

“On a hot summer’s day, George got himself an ice cream.  He took one bite, and it felt like he was on a roller coaster of joy.”

Finally, but by no means least, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling are taught within the Literacy hour

Every occasion is an opportunity to thank parents and carers for helping us to get the job done.  Ensuring that the children read, to an adult for a minimum of twenty minutes every day, and that they learn to spell the words on the above spelling list, go a long way to preparing them for Year Four.

Thanks to all of you!

Maths

The ability to read and understand the time is an important life skill in modern society. Therefore, in our maths lessons this half-term, we have been working on developing our knowledge and understanding of time. Through interactive games and independent activities, we explored telling the analogue and digital time both past the hour and to the next hour. We also started solving simple problems related to time durations where we had to work out how much time has elapsed between two events.

Topic

In Topic we have been learning about Ancient Egypt. We learnt that the civilization of Ancient Egypt began about 5,000 years ago and have ordered key events on a timeline. We have also had lots of fun learning about the River Nile, the Pyramids of Giza and the hierarchy of Ancient Egypt.

We also learnt about the significance of the River Nile in helping Ancient Egypt to flourish, and made links to our work in science about rock formation when exploring the pyramids.
