Summer 1 Update

In Literacy this half term, we have been writing our own narrative stories about volcanoes. We have been doing this alongside our topic lessons which have also been about volcanoes. We used a range of grammar skills such as fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases to make our writing more dramatic. We also used speech and powerful verbs to engage our readers. To help us create our narrative stories, we used “Now Press Play” to help us visualise what a volcanic eruption might have felt like in Pompeii.

In Geography this term we have been learning about natural disasters and how they affect our environment. To find out more, we used laptops to research different natural disasters like volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunami, drought and flooding. We first noted down important information and then worked in groups to prepare a presentation. We also visited the Natural History Museum where we experienced an earthquake simulation and learned a lot more about our topic. It was so exciting!

In maths, we have been learning about calculating missing numbers. We used the inverse operation to solve a variety of problems involving a missing number. We interpreted data from a range of graphs including pictograms, bar charts and pie charts. We looked at the graphs to find explicit information, as well as implicit information – using our problem solving skills to calculate answers.
