Autumn 2

The highlight for many children this term was our residential trip to Cheshunt.

The highlight for many children this term was our residential trip to Cheshunt. The children got to take part in fun activities including: bell boating, archery and climbing. This was a fantastic opportunity for Year 5 to develop through the Curwen’s Core skills: Teamwork, Resilience, Communication, Strive for Success, and Leadership. They also took part in a fun general knowledge quiz and some pupils even got a few hours of sleep. It was a great opportunity to make new bonds and learn more about each other. Everyone had a brilliant time! Next up…The Lake District!

In Literacy, they have been continuing with the school’s Whole Class Reading approach. 5C has been reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, 5T Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, 5L Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and finally, 5B has read The Boy at the Back of the Class. The children have immersed themselves in these books, and speak confidently and passionately about them. They used their class books as a hook when completing fabulous descriptive writing pieces. These included different literary devices to engage the reader, as well as elements to build up suspense and tension.

In Maths, Year 5 has been consolidating their understanding of the 4 number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). In order to deepen their understanding the children have learnt how to solve more complex operations, as well as identifying and explaining their own mistakes and misconceptions.
