Summer 1

Topic

This term has been absolutely amazing and jams packed!! In topic we have been learning about Schools in the Past. We looked at changes in ourselves over time and ordered the different stages of our lives on a timeline. We looked at how children learnt in schools during the Victorian times. We transformed our classroom into a Victorian classroom and we used chalk and chalkboards to write with. It was not easy!! We carried out research which showed us how hard school was during the Victorian times and that there was a heavy price to pay if any mistakes were made. We definitely appreciate our school life at Curwen Primary!

Literacy

This term we had some special visitors at Curwen. The arrival of the ducklings had everybody excited and what an experience we had. We observed them as eggs and watched them hatch, grow and swim. We learnt about the life cycle of a duckling and created fact files about the different stages of their lives.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about measure. We learnt how to use a ruler to measure accurately and balance scales to weigh mass. We discussed the importance of it in real life. We need to measure when building, buying clothes, cooking and many other reasons! We compared different measures and ordered objects according to their sizes. We also organised our friends in height order which was a challenge as some of us are very similar in height!

Geography

In Topic we have been learning about The Local Area. We learnt about Human and Physical features and took a trip around the local area to look for human and physical features. We also learnt to use directional language and used a mapping programme on the Ipad to help us remember the key directions. We also gave our partners instructions using directional language to help them get from one place to another. This activity required a lot of resilience and teamwork!

 Literacy

In Literacy we have been writing non-chronological reports. We learnt about the features of a non-chronological report and what their purpose is. To prepare our report we looked at the different parts of the school and wrote about what Curwen Primary School has to offer. We also learnt about capital letters, full stops, plurals and conjunctions to make our writing interesting.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about addition, subtraction and patterns. We learn by using concrete and physical objects before we move on to pictorial and abstract learning. We also discussed the importance of using these skills in real life.
