Hatching of Chicks
Published 08/05/26The wonder of life…
For several years now, we have enjoyed the wonder of watching the live hatching of chicks. Children observed the miracle of them pecking and struggling their way out, then recovering in the incubator before rapidly developing into lively, fluffy chicks that were soon able to feed and drink for themselves. The process enriched and brought the children’s science learning of animal topics to life, where they learnt about the care of animals, growth, life cycles, diets, food chains and habitats.

This entire event was their own initiative, and they worked incredibly hard—from planning the stalls to serving up treats with a smile—to make the day a success.
We are thrilled to announce that their dedication truly paid off, as they managed to raise a grand total of £227.40!

A Celebration of Voices: Our Multilingual Storytime!
Published 16/03/26Last Thursday, March 5th, as part of our World Book day, Curwen Primary School was filled with the wonderful sounds of different languages and cultures during our Multilingual Storytime. This special event gave children across the entire school the opportunity to choose a story and hear it brought to life by our talented staff members in a variety of languages, including Portuguese, Twi, Bengali, Mandarin, Romanian and Kweyol, to name but a few. It was a fantastic afternoon of discovery, laughter and pride. Whether children were hearing their own home language celebrated in the classroom or learning their very first words in a brand-new tongue, the engagement was truly inspiring. From interactive drumming and acting to learning about Caribbean superstitions and European folk tales, our pupils dived headfirst into the rich diversity of our school community.
What our pupils had to say: The feedback from the children captures the magic of the afternoon perfectly:
"The experience was super fun and interesting. I would like to learn more about languages."
— Noor, 4DLR
"I enjoyed hearing you read in a different language and learning my name." — Mila, 2G
"I liked hearing the different languages and trying to work out the patterns or any words. I could read the English translation too, so I understood the story, but I really liked listening to a different language for its own sake." — Ana, 5A
We want to say a huge thank you to all the staff who took the time to share their languages and heritage. As Miss Bryan (5CB) shared:
"I absolutely loved sharing my language with the children who visited my class. They were engaged and very interested in the story... This makes me proud to be Dominican."
Events like these remind us how lucky we are to belong to such a vibrant, multilingual school. We are already looking forward to our next storytelling adventure! - Read More

House of Parliament trip with School Council
Published 05/12/25A bright-eyed group of student representatives from Curwen Primary School recently traded the classroom for the grand halls of the Houses of Parliament. The School Council members embarked on a special trip to London to delve into the heart of British democracy and explore the rich history of Parliament.
Their day began with a guided tour led by a Parliament Education Officer. The tour wove through the iconic Palace of Westminster, showcasing the awe-inspiring chambers of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The students witnessed firsthand the hallowed spaces where crucial debates and decisions are made that shape the nation.
But the learning went far beyond just seeing the sights. The tour incorporated interactive elements, allowing the School Council to engage with the democratic process. They learned about the roles of Members of Parliament (MPs) and Lords, how bills are passed into law, and the importance of a strong opposition.

The day added more excitement when they got to meet James Asser, who is the MP for our local area. All pupils got involved by asking the MP different questions, which helped them to better understand his roles and responsibilities.
This educational trip proved to be much more than just a sightseeing adventure. It empowered the School Council to become more informed and engaged citizens. They returned to school brimming with newfound knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the democratic processes that shape their lives. Who knows, perhaps this visit has ignited a spark in a future generation of political leaders!

Pupil Parliament Network meeting
Published 28/11/25Our talented Pupil Parliament representatives recently attended the Newham Pupil Parliament Network meeting on November 24th.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our young leaders to connect with peers from other schools, honing their debating skills and developing their abilities in oracy, advocacy, and representation. They reflected on their roles and duties and discussed what they need to do to become successful members of the Pupil Parliament. They also learnt how debates take place in the Houses of Parliament, culminating in a debate on the crucial topic of the Climate Crisis.
We're incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication!
