For this session, we visited a different Forest School area in the Linden Garden. As we were covering map skills we took the opportunity to encourage  children to identify the route through the park to the FS area and to identify some key features that we passed. The nature of using the map in the field meant that children could start to grasp the idea of scale through seeing the huge difference in the size of the maps (both of the park and the FS area) and the actual areas. The children also got to grips with the baiscs of using a compass including the parts using degrees as a measure of turn and using the compass to find directions using 4 or 8 compass points.
