English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Hello! My name is Mrs Teixeira, and I am the EAL (English as an Additional Language) Lead Interventions Officer at Curwen Primary School. I have a background in Translation and Teaching English as a Foreign Language and am interested in anything related to languages.

I work with children who have EAL since the day they arrive at Curwen. Some of the children that we admit are New to English and to the country and, particularly to these, starting school in England is a major transition in their lives.

My work is to welcome the new children, assess their level of English and support them with their English Language needs, as well as build up their confidence and ensure they feel welcome, included and happy in our school.

Currently, almost 60% of the children in Curwen have English as an additional language. However, only around 30 need language support and these are included in many regular focused lessons to improve their Social, Listening, Speaking, Reading or Writing skills. Additionally, all staff have regular training to work with children with EAL.

I liaise with parents as well, either by facilitating communication, arranging interpretation services, organising ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, conducting home visits where I share resources and suggest the best support at home or by involving EAL parents in school activities, like in our fantastic International & Family Week!

This is only a part of all the amazing work we do in Curwen with children and parents who have English as an additional language. Please have a look below at the different support that we provide.

Feel free to contact me if you need help or have any suggestions. Simply ask to speak to Mrs Teixeira through our school email address or phone number.
