Science Open Afternoon for Parents 2022-23

It was great to see parents back in school for our science afternoon after such a long time following Covid-19 measures.

There was lots of great work happening throughout the school with children using their working scientifically skills and enjoying showing their parents what they could do.

There were all sorts of fun and creative activities going on from blowing bubbles in Nursery and soaking up dinosaur wee in Reception to considering materials to make a floating boat in year 1 and making simple electrical circuits in year 2. In key stage 2, children were testing the acidity of liquids, testing sounds, creating scientific space models to see what it would be like on other planets and testing which materials conduct electricity. It was a busy afternoon and everyone was really enthused about all the experiments - everyone was especially excited to predict what would happen before testing to see the results.

Thank you to all the teachers, children and parents that made the afternoon a success!

Some feedback from parents:

“It was such an amazing experience. I really enjoyed it. So happy to be part of it.”

“Really enjoyed seeing the kids learn through investigation.”

“Well done to the children and staff – they showed so much understanding of the topics learnt.”

“Thank you for the opportunity to do an interesting experiment with the kids – very educational.”

“Fantastic to be able to share and spend some time in class. Thanks for the opportunity. Well done kids and teachers.”

What is Working Scientifically?

  • Questioning
  • Scientific enquiry – observing changes, finding patterns, grouping and classifying, fair testing and researching using secondary sources
  • Drawing conclusions based on data and observations
  • Using evidence to justify ideas
  • Using scientific knowledge to explain findings
