All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- Use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke)
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
At Curwen Primary School our Year 6 pupils attend Balaam Leisure Centre for two weeks of intensive swimming lessons in May / June.
We have also been fortunate to have the ‘Make a Splash’ ‘pop up pool’ in our school playground in 2015 for 12 weeks and 2013 for 12 weeks. During that time the whole school learnt to swim.
Additional swimming lessons are provided by active newham http://www.activenewham.org.uk/
